Brandye's Story of Determination

Brandye bubbled with pride and gratitude as she received her certificate of completion last month. She is the 600th woman to graduate from the Women’s Empowerment job readiness program since our first class in 2001.

A year ago, Brandye, a mother of three young children, was entangled in an abusive relationship where she had been stuck for six years. She had tried to leave many times, but without knowing where to turn for help, she always found herself right back where she started.

Brandye is not alone.  More than 89% of the homeless women who turn to Women’s Empowerment have experienced domestic violence.

When Brandye finally summoned her courage and left, she luckily found a bed at a local shelter and learned about Women’s Empowerment. “I wanted structure,” she says.  “I needed someone to help give me direction so I could succeed on my own.”

At Women’s Empowerment, Brandye found hope and inspiration.  Getting help with her resume, she dedicated herself to submitting 15 job applications per week! Through our nutrition and fitness classes, she changed her eating habits and lost 10 pounds. When her Women’s Empowerment social worker outlined some housing options, Brandye jumped quickly through the steps and secured her place in a permanent housing program.

She and her children moved into an apartment this month. This will be their first Thanksgiving together living in a safe place in many years.

In addition to the practical lessons Brandye learned, she began to see herself differently. “Now that I care about me, others care about me,” she beams.

Brandye earned her success, but she did not do it alone. You and other supporters ensured that the tools she needed were available at Women’s Empowerment. Thank you.

In these difficult times, when the need of families like Brandye’s is at an all-time high, we are extremely grateful for your generosity. Please consider a gift this holiday season.  Women like Brandye will discover a new beginning, thanks to your kindness.
